A City Shaped by Music and Art

Few cities of Leipzig's size can match its cultural significance. Bach composed here, Wagner was born here, and the peaceful revolution of 1989 started here. Today, Leipzig's cultural scene is as vibrant as ever — a compelling mix of centuries-old tradition and cutting-edge contemporary art.

Music Heritage

Gewandhaus Orchestra — One of the world's oldest and finest orchestras. Founded in 1743, it performs in the acoustically renowned Gewandhaus concert hall. Tickets are surprisingly affordable — a world-class concert for as little as €20.

St. Thomas Church & Thomanerchor — Johann Sebastian Bach served as Thomaskantor here for 27 years. The St. Thomas Boys Choir, founded in 1212, still performs weekly motets (Fridays 6 PM, Saturdays 3 PM). Free admission.

Leipzig Opera — Germany's third-oldest opera company, housed in a striking modernist building on Augustusplatz. The repertoire ranges from classical to contemporary premieres.

Bach Museum — An interactive museum dedicated to Leipzig's most famous musical resident. The listening stations where you can explore Bach's complete works are extraordinary.

Visual Arts

Spinnerei — Europe's largest art complex in a former cotton mill. Over 100 artists, 11 galleries, and the birthplace of the New Leipzig School (Neo Rauch, Rosa Loy). Monthly open studio events.

Museum of Fine Arts — From medieval altarpieces to Caspar David Friedrich to Max Beckmann and contemporary installations. One of Germany's finest collections.

GfZK (Gallery for Contemporary Art) — Cutting-edge exhibitions in a striking building. Focus on international contemporary art, video and installation.

History & Society

Forum of Contemporary History — Documents Germany's division and reunification. The exhibition on the Peaceful Revolution is particularly moving.

Stasi Museum (Runde Ecke) — The former Stasi headquarters, preserved as a memorial. A sobering and essential visit.

Panometer — Yadegar Asisi's immersive 360-degree panoramas in a converted gasometer. The current exhibition changes every 1-2 years.

Tips for Cultural Visitors

  • Leipzig Pass — Unlimited public transport and discounts at museums and concerts
  • Book early for Gewandhaus and Opera — popular performances sell out
  • First Saturday of each month: Spinnerei open studio day
  • Combine a motet at Thomaskirche with dinner at Stadtpfeiffer — both on the same square
