Leipzig Off the Beaten Path
Leipzig is more than the Battle of the Nations Monument and St. Thomas Church. If you really want to get to know the city, you need to look beyond the well-trodden tourist paths. Here are ten places that even many locals don't have on their radar.
1. Spinnerei — Art in a Former Cotton Mill
The Leipzig Cotton Mill (Spinnerei) in the west of the city is one of the largest art centers in Europe. Over 100 artists work in their studios on the grounds of the former factory. Every first Saturday of the month, there are open tours — free of charge and with the opportunity to speak directly with the artists.
2. Karl-Heine-Kanal — Leipzig's Secret Waterway
Forget Venice. The Karl-Heine Canal connects the west of the city with the Elster-Saale Canal and can be wonderfully explored by kayak or stand-up paddle. In summer, boat tours depart from the Sachsenbrücke — an experience that most city guides don't mention.
3. Plagwitz — The Creative Heart of the City
What Berlin-Kreuzberg was 15 years ago, Plagwitz is today: a vibrant mix of galleries, concept stores, craft beer bars and small workshops. Karl-Heine-Strasse is the main artery of the neighborhood — one independent café after another.
4. Panometer — Panoramic Art in a Gasometer
Yadegar Asisi's enormous 360-degree panoramas in a former gasometer are breathtaking. The installations change every one to two years and show themes from ancient cities to natural wonders. Unique in Germany.
5. Clara-Zetkin-Park at Sunset
Leipzig's Central Park. But instead of coming during the day, plan your visit at sunset. The golden hour over the wide meadows, the light through the old trees — better than any Instagram photo.
6. Auerbach's Cellar — Done Right
Yes, every Goethe fan knows Auerbach's Cellar. What many don't know: in the historic part of the restaurant, there is a four-course menu with wine pairing that elevates Saxon cuisine to star level. Be sure to reserve in advance.
7. Lake Cospuden — Leipzig's Beach
Just 20 minutes from the center lies the "Cossi" — a former open-pit mine transformed into a bathing lake. White sandy beach, sailboats, beach bars. On a warm spring day, it feels like the Baltic Sea.
8. Moritzbastei — Europe's Largest Student Club
Underground, in the vaults of a medieval fortress, lies one of Germany's most legendary clubs. Concerts, readings, cabaret — the program changes daily. The atmosphere in the cellar vaults is unique.
9. St. Thomas Church — Friday Evening Motet
St. Thomas Church as an insider tip? Yes, if you know when to come. Every Friday at 6 PM and Saturday at 3 PM, the St. Thomas Boys Choir sings a motet. Admission is free, the acoustics are world-class — and the visitor numbers are manageable.
10. Feinkost — Culinary Arts and Culture in the Courtyard
The Feinkost complex in the Südvorstadt is a former factory that now houses restaurants, bars, a club and a beer garden. In summer, open-air cinema and flea markets are regularly held here.
